Music has been present since the dawn of humankind. It is linked to social and religious rituals. The first musical instruments were flutes made of bone, and they are more than 30,000 years old! In Sumer and Egypt, some 3,500 years ago, primitive percussion and string instruments already existed.

The ancient Greeks wrote the first treatises on music in the West. For them, music was very important for its educational and moral value, and it was always linked to poetry.

Over time, music in the West evolved. During the Middle Ages, liturgical chants of the Catholic Church were sung.

During the Renaissance, new styles emerged, such as the Franco-Flemish School and Baroque music, and in the Classical period the great European classical music orchestras arose. Then came Romanticism, in which new forms linked to popular culture were created.

Finally, in the age of Impressionism and Modernism, contemporary music began — a style characterized by great diversity and by constantly exploring new musical genres. And that’s how music has evolved to what it is today!
