From the mythical founding of Rome to the fall of the Western Empire in AD 476, this exhibition covers the great battles, the figures who changed history and the daily life of those who built — and destroyed — the greatest empire of the ancient world.

Diorama of the Siege of Sarmizegetusa
A monumental reconstruction of the most decisive battle of the Dacian Wars. Hundreds of scale figures recreate the moment when Trajan brought Rome to its greatest territorial extent.

The origin: Kings and legends
From Romulus and Remus to the seven kings. The mythical founding and the first centuries of royal power in Latium.
The Republic and the Punic Wars
The Senate and the republican institutions. Carthage, Hannibal and the Battle of Zama: the duel that decided who would rule the ancient world.
The crisis of the Republic
Marius, Sulla, Julius Caesar. The civil wars that turned centuries of republic into personal autocracy.
The legion and the games
The Roman soldier: equipment, strategy and life on campaign. The games: gladiators, beasts and chariot races at the heart of the Empire.
Augustus and the Julio-Claudians
The first emperor and the dynasty that shaped the Empire at its height. The Pax Romana and the architecture of power.
The imperial zenith
Trajan, Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius. The Empire at its greatest territorial extent, prosperity and cultural brilliance.
The Siege of Sarmizegetusa
A monumental diorama of Trajan's campaign that subdued the Dacians and brought Rome to its greatest extent. The centrepiece of the exhibition.
The twilight: Decline and fall
Military anarchy, barbarian invasions and the division of the Empire. The end of the ancient world and the beginning of the Middle Ages.
The Siege of
Sarmizegetusa
In AD 106, Trajan completed the conquest of Dacia with the capture of its capital, Sarmizegetusa Regia. This episode, meticulously reconstructed in the exhibition's monumental diorama, marked the greatest territorial expansion of the Roman Empire.
Hundreds of hand-painted scale figures and terrain recreated with archaeological fidelity bring back to life a moment that decided the fate of two civilisations. Two TVs with maps, images and contextual material complete the experience.
