Known as a symbol of seduction, Cleopatra was in fact a cultured, polyglot and strategic queen, capable of ruling Egypt in the face of Rome’s power.
The Making of the Cleopatra Legend
After her death in 30 BC, Cleopatra became a figure shaped by Roman propaganda. This is how the dark legend that transformed her image in history was born.
In contrast, other traditions preserved a different view: that of a wise and protective sovereign. This duality between history and myth is key to understanding her figure.
A Figure Reinterpreted Through Time
Over the centuries, Cleopatra has been reinterpreted as a political enemy, a moral symbol or a cultural icon.
This lecture examines how these narratives are constructed and how power, propaganda and gender influence historical memory.
Was Cleopatra Really Beautiful?
Through coins, sculptures and ancient sources, this lecture addresses one of the best-known questions: to what extent her image reflects reality or myth.
